South Africa Fall 2012, 9 days/8 nights

When was the last meaningful journey you had where not only did you enjoy the many delights of
the country you visited but returned inspired to make a difference?
We invite you to join a small group of like-minded individuals for an exclusive, philanthropy
focused Luminary Journey to South Africa in fall 2012.
We have carefully crafted a 11-day itinerary that strikes a comfortable balance. We've combined
engaging site visits and meaningful discussions centered around research, care and services
related to HIV/AIDS with experiencing the absolute best of South Africa - the inspiring people, the
vibrant culture, the cosmopolitan cities, the lush wine country, the dramatic coastline and the
incredible bush.
Throughout your journey you will travel in comfort, staying in world-class lodging, enjoying the best
of local cuisine and engaging in inspiring experiences on the ground and in the air.
I can't begin to tell you the amazing people you will encounter along the way - leaders on the front
lines of the battle against HIV/AIDS. "During my recent scouting trip, I listened to a story from a
young mother who was absolutely determined not to die or to transmit HIV to her unborn child, and
now she is an amazing advocate for helping other mothers in the same situation. HIV/AIDS is no
longer a death sentence; she and her HIV-negative 3 yr. old son are proof of it."
According to a 2009 South African Department of Health study that polled 32,861 women in 1,447
anti-natal clinics, the national estimated HIV prevalence was 29.4%, with four out of nine provinces
exceeding the national average up to a high of 39.5% in KwaZulu-Natal, arguable ground zero for
the pandemic. "I was shocked when during a site visit in KwaZulu-Natal, someone told me that
infection rate in teenage girls was over 60%."
From innovative social entrepreneurs and determined mothers to charismatic traditional healers
and medical researchers, each will leave an imprint on your soul. You will leave South Africa with
a greater understanding of the role that dedicated philanthropy can make on such a devastating
issue and energized to make a difference yourself. It is truly hopeful.
